No denying Newton
The
Colourfast Criterium was dominated by Christopher Newton of Teesside Clarion,
who went clear halfway into the 40 minute race and continued excellent
winning form in his first year as a junior. A member of the Great Britain
Track Squad, 16-year-old Newton can also boast the achievement of becoming
the Cleveland Division Track and Road Champion in the same season.
Behind the leader New Zealanders John Crookes and Glen Mitchell - over
for the Junior World Championships - were joined by Scott Bennett (Barnsley
RC) in a three-man breakaway , while Scott Gamble Ashfleld RC) fought
hard to bridge the gap from the bunch.
There was no denying Newton his victory, which was achieved in 41.52
minutes, while the other two places on the rostrum went to Crookes and
Mitchell.
