Newton at the double

Newton (Teesside Clarion/ICI) won the Ferryhill Wheelers' Australian.
Pursuit at Bishopton in a bunch sprint.
Newton's scratch group took until the last lap of the 30-mile, five-lap
race to bring the field together, after which the bunch allowed no-one
to break away.
The in-form junior rider outsprinted both Norman Dunn (Paragon RT) and
Tony McKenna (Northern Velo/SIB) who were placed second and third respectively.

Newton stayed in form on Wednesday in the Track League's meeting at Cleveland
County Stadium winning the ten-lap points race and the B class one-lap
sprint final.
In the Cleveland Division Pursuit Championship Newton was beaten by Andy
Chatterton (Hartlepool CC) in the semi-finals and Marshall Thomas beat
his Ferryhill Wheeler club-mate Ivan Pratt in their semi-final.
In the final Thomas took gold with a time of 5m 22s, six seconds ahead
of Chatterton. Newton claimed bronze, a further seven seconds adrift.
Chris now plans to ride in the Junior Divisional Road-Race Championships
at Ponteland on Sunday. He will face tough competition from Bedale's Stephen
Clarke who is preparing for the junior world championships in Cleveland
later this month. Track League results:
