Young Newton wins by a whisker
By GRAHAM SNOWDEN

CHRIS Newton, the Northern Velo junior, improved from second place a week earlier to win the second of Hartlepool Cycling Club's Hurworth Burn pursuits on Sunday:

Newton gained the verdict by a tyre's width in a disputed finish with Bedale's Steve Clark, the world junior championship rider from Bedale who is now riding for the City of Edinburgh club.

Newton's Velo club-mate Tony McKenna took third place, just one second back, from Ian Norris, of Ridley CC, Geoff Mount, of Barnesbury CC, and Andy Chatterton, of Hartlepool CC.

All but Mount, who was the leading third category finisher, had started in the scratch group, giving the front markers a four-minute allowance.

1. Chris Newton (Northern Velo)
2. Steve Clark (City of Edinburgh)
3. Tony McKenna (Northern Velo) at 1 sec
4. Ian Norris (Ridley CC)
5. Geoff Mount (Barnesbury CC)
6. Andy Chatterton (Hartlepool CC)
