Chris is Carlton cruise

CHRIS Newton's first place was one of several fine performances by local junior and juvenile racing cyclists in the Cleveland Wheelers Carlton Bank Hill Climb.

In his last ride as a junior Chris took victory by nineteen seconds from Teesside Clarion's Graeme Hatcher.

Sunny conditions and a light wind meant that riders would only have to concentrate on the difficulties of the tortuous 1.2 mile ascent from Carlton Village up on to the moors.

Off at number four in the 26 rider field, Richard Williamson (Cleveland Wheelers), set a time of 8min. 12secs. that would not be beaten by any of the remaining juvenile riders. His clubmate Ben Leaver was the only one to come close with his time of 8mins. 36secs.

Graeme Hatcher, starting at number 10, set the standard for the junior and senior challengers when he rode strongly for a time of 7mins I sec. This time withstood the challenge of Cleveland Wheelers senior, Stuart Mac

Pherson who took sixteen seconds longer, but few doubted that Newton would set the fastest time.

Chris showed that he possesses strength as well as speed when he overtook the three riders who had preceded him on the climb and finished with a time of 6mins. 42secs.

With the rule of one prize per rider excluding Newton and Hatcher from the junior awards, David Kirton's (Teesside Clarion) time of 7mins. 41secs. gave him first prize, 8secs. ahead of Jonathan Berry (Ferryhill Wheelers).
