New record for British juniors

The British pursuit team rode to a national record in finishing fourth. In top form, the sleek train of Chris Newton, Andy Forbes, Paul Jennings and Hayles powered to an underdog win in the quarter-finals over the United States. Their valiant effort, however, ended in the semi-finals, with a 1.9-second loss to Germany.

Newton remarked that the new record, 4:29.21, "shows what we can do," and coach Doug Dailey concluded, "That's as much as we could have expected - maybe more."
