Track champ Newton shows his power on Carlisle roads
By Graham Snowdon

CHRIS Newton, Middlesbrough's new national 20km champion on the track, demonstrated his road racing form when he won the Carlisle Great Fair event on Sunday.

The Middridge CRT rider crossed the line 20 seconds clear at the end of a 66-mile course based on Cumdivock, Cumbria, after leaving his breakaway companions Will Wright, from Manchester, and Fergus Watt, from Erskine (Scotland).

They had escaped from the field with 22 miles remaining, opening up a 90sec lead.

Jeff Wright (North East RT), despite crashing on the fifth of six laps and suffering from gravel wounds, took the sprint for fourth place from Scotland's Graham McGarrity, with another North East team rider, Russell Thompson, completing the top six.

1. Chris Newton (Middridge CRT) 66-miles
2. Will Wright (Manchester) at 20secs
3. Fergus Watt (Scotland)
4. Jeff Wright (North East RT) at 1min 30secs
5. Graham McGarrity (Scotland)
6. Russell Thompson (North East)
