Record broken after 12 years

CHRIS Newton of Middridge CRT outclassed his local rivals on Bank Holiday Monday with a storming ride in the Thomas Ord Memorial Trophy mountain time trial.

The event, promoted by Cleveland Coureurs, climbs Clay Bank by each of its three approaches to finish at the Summit Car Park after 22.5 miles.

Newton finally broke Joe Waugh's 12-year-old course record, his time of 54.50, beating Waugh's 55.01.

Aerodynamic

Waugh's 1981 record did not have the aid of the more aerodynamic Tri Bars and Tri Spoke Wheels, which helped Newton this week.

But his record was reckoned to have been set in ideal conditions, contrasting with Monday when it was very windy in Bilsdale, making 19-year-old Newton's feat all the more remarkable.

Last year's winner, Neville Jackson of Roxby Wheelers, was happy with his second place, especially as this event counts towards the Teesside District Spoco (sporting course) competition which Jackson is favourite to win.

He did lose an estimated 30 seconds when held up by the holiday traffic at the old fashioned turn in the road near the Sun Inn in Bilsdale.

Shaun Tyson of Hartlepool CC showed remarkable consistency and recovery in finishing third after placing well in the previous two days' time trials.
