One-two for Middridge

CHRIS Newton led a one-two for the Middridge Cycle Racing Team when he survived cold, wet and misty conditions to win the 60-mile Blanchland Trophy road race at Edmundbyers.

He left his new team-mate David Cook, Darlington's former national amateur road race champion, to salvage second place.

Cook had broken clear in company with Ian Murray, of Stockton Wheelers, just six miles into the Tyne Velo race.

Newton eventually bridged the gap to the two, leaders, then escaped alone to cross the line two minutes clear as the leading ten riders were spread over ten minutes.

On the way, Newton had also clinched the King of the Mountains title.
