Newton heads a clean sweep

MIDDLESBROUGH'S
Chris Newton led a clean sweep of the top seven places by Middridge CRT
riders in the 81-mile British Cycling Federation (Cleveland Division)
senior road race championship on Sunday.
Newton crossed the line 20 seconds clear, having dropped his team-mate
and breakaway companion Tony McKenna just before the final climb on the
last of 11 laps of a circuit between Sedgefield, Fishburn and Coxhoe.
Middridge riders Mark Addinall, Norman Dunn, David Cook, Michael Wright
and Graeme Hatcher filled the next places as defending champion Nigel
Nicholson (Richmond and Darlington CC) was relegated to tenth place.
Newton and McKenna had both been in the original break of five riders
which formed within the first mile.
