Newton victorious with Velo

MIDDLESBROUGH'S Chris Newton made a winning debut in his new colours as a member of the crack North Wirral VeloKodak team on Sunday.

The former Middridge CRT rider, who was national 20km champion in 1993 and won a silver medal for England in the. team pursuit at last year's Commonwealth Games, formed a winning combination with new team-mate Pete Longbottom.

Longbottom, a silver medallist in the 100km team time trial in Canada, comes from Malton and is rider-manager of the Wirral team which has risen to prominence largely through the exploits of its most famous former rider, Olympic and world champion Chris Boardman.

Longbottom and Newton finished head and shoulders above the opposition in Ellesmere Port CC's 25-Mile "two-up" event which opened the Northern time trial season.

They demolished the event record set by Boardman and Simon Lillistone in 1993 when they covered a course based on Broxton, Cheshire, in 51min 21sec.

This was almost two minutes faster than the old figure and gave them a winning margin of almost five minutes over their nearest club team opponents, Paul Moore and Peter Lloyd, of Southport RCC.

Longbottom, just back from a week's hard training in Majorca, said: "Apart from a warm-up ride before the event we had not even trained for a two-up, but it all went very well.

"Chris is a class rider. It was his first ride in a Wirral jersey and I am sure he will prove to be a great asset to us."
