Merseyside Divisional RR Championship
4-Jun-1995

CHRIS Newton moved across from the Cleveland Division to lead a North Wirral Velo-Kodak clean sweep in the Merseyside Division title over a hard 92-mile course in the Delamere Forest area of Cheshire.

Newton attacked on the final climb of Overton Hill, four miles from the finish, and opened up a 37second lead over his team-mate Simon Lillistone. Defending champion Matt Stephens took the bronze medal, almost nine minutes down, with Jon Newey (Prescot Eagle) best Merseyside resident in fourth place.

Newton, Lillistone, Newey and Dave Hitchen (New Brighton CC) had gone clear from the start. As Newton and Lillistone piled on the pressure each time up the climb the other two did well to hang on until first Hitchen lost contact, eventually retiring, and Newey pressed on alone for a hoped-for bronze.

But that was denied when Stephens caught and passed him on the final lap.
