British National Madison Championship
5-Aug-1995
New winning partners DEFENDING champion Rob Hayles (Computer PersonnelFuturama) retained his title with new partner Russell Williams (Geoffrey Butler Cycles) in a high-speed finale on Saturday night. The 200 laps were completed inside an hour with the tempo such that only eight teams were left on the track well before half distance. Hayles dominated the sprints, winning all but two in an excellent display of riding, and even a front wheel puncture for Williams nine laps from the end did nothing to halt their march to the title which was clinched with a flying last lap at the front. Bryan Steel (Team Chilwell), the other half of last year's winning combination, and Spencer Wingrave (Roberts Cycles) tried all they knew to halt the HaylesWilliams tandem, with the North Wirral Velo pairing of Simon Lillistone and Chris Newton scoring steadily behind them to secure the bronze medal. The race started with a bold bid to take a lap by TS Tameside's Chris Giles and Jon Hargreaves. Going from the gun, they were half a lap up at one stage only to be swallowed up at the first sprint after 20 laps, eventually finishing eighth and losing two laps. The irrepressible Williams won his 21st track medal - a total probably matched by the number of warnings he seems to pick up for a variety of indiscretions - in a run which started as a juvenile back in 1976.
