Tour du Chablais - Stage Race (France)
24-May-1997

Newton placed again

CHRIS Newton, the Teessider riding in France for VC Annemasse, finished sixth overall in the hilly three-stage Tour du Chablais.

"I struggled a bit at the start of the first stage," explained Newton, "but on the second 8km climb I felt a lot better and eventually got away in a chase group behind the four leaders. I got sixth on the stage. Then in the afternoon, in the 16km time trial, I did a really bad ride. It was pouring with rain, really slippy and I went off course. On the next day the CC Etupes team closed it down and that was that."

Newton has had five wins this season and has rarely been out of the top 10, all of which should stand him in good stead when he rides the Tour de l’Avenir in September. Newton is coming back 'home' this week to ride the national `25' championship.
