NEW national 25-mile champion Chris Newton (Linda McCartney RT) failed by just two seconds to get inside 20 minutes despite average conditions for Cleveland Coureurs' 10-mile TT on the Crathorne course in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

Newton's 20-01 was 20 seconds faster than Keith Murray had managed in ideal conditions on the same course three days earlier, and some observers felt that a long '18' would have been within Newton's grasp if conditions had been as good for Saturday's event.
