Neil White Memorial
3-Mar-2002

LAST year's surprise winner Stuart Wearmouth (Science in Sport.com) had to settle for third place this time as scratch riders Chris Newton (GS Pinarello) and Steve Cummings (unattached) flexed their muscles in the Neil White Memorial pursuit at Stokesley, North Yorkshire.

A year ago Newton blew under the strain of a hard chase to the head of the field, but he made no mistake this time as he, Cummings and Paul Manning (VC St Raphael) wiped out an 11-minute deficit on the longmarkers.

Wearmouth, the World Cyclo-Cross Championship rider who had started in the penultimate group, three minutes in front of the scratch men, at least had the satisfaction of outsprinting Manning for third place by two lengths as Newton and Cummings opened up a 1-30 lead together.

Ricky King (VS Brigantia) had taken the prime at the end of the fourth of six laps, but the chasers hit the front of the race shortly after.
