Chris Newton is 2002 winner of CA Rhodes memorial

CHRIS Newton had better find some more room in his already bulging trophy cabinet. For the Stockton sensation has added another title to his huge collection.

Chris, 29, is the 2002 winner of the CA Rhodes memorial, recognised as the most prestigious prize in Yorkshire cycling.

A regional selection panel plumped for ex-Olympian Chris in recognition of his outstanding rainbow jersey-taking ride to win the world points race in Copenhagen last October.

He joins a star-studded list of riders to have won the trophy, including fellow Teessider Paul Curran, Beryl Burton, Yvonne McGregor, Arthur Metcalfe and Kevin Dawson.

The award was instituted in 1961 as a tribute to the memory of Charles Arthur Rhodes (1895-1961). Charles was a leading light of the Yorkshire Road Club, co-founder in 1932 of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation and a nationally recognised timekeeper and administrator.

Former Boynton School pupil Chris reached the peak of his powers in capturing 2002 global glory. It was a year in which he also added a silver medal and bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester to Olympic team pursuit bronze in 2000.
