Chris Newton is 2002 winner of CA Rhodes memorial
Chris, 29, is the 2002 winner of the CA Rhodes memorial, recognised as the most prestigious prize in Yorkshire cycling. A regional selection panel plumped for ex-Olympian Chris in recognition of his outstanding rainbow jersey-taking ride to win the world points race in Copenhagen last October. He joins a star-studded list of riders to have won the trophy, including fellow Teessider Paul Curran, Beryl Burton, Yvonne McGregor, Arthur Metcalfe and Kevin Dawson. The award was instituted in 1961 as a tribute to the memory of Charles Arthur Rhodes (1895-1961). Charles was a leading light of the Yorkshire Road Club, co-founder in 1932 of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation and a nationally recognised timekeeper and administrator. Former Boynton School pupil Chris reached the peak of his powers in capturing 2002 global glory. It was a year in which he also added a silver medal and bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester to Olympic team pursuit bronze in 2000. |
