MANNING MISSES OUT AS EVANS TAKES HOME WIN

DAY 1 -- GB’s Paul Manning had the galling experience of making the crucial break and then getting dropped with 2km to go on the opening stage of the FBD Milk Ras in Ireland. Manning won the race two years ago and looked on course to make an excellent start to this year’s event when he made the only significant break of the day, getting away from the main bunch with Dane Ari Hojgaard and Ireland’s Tommy Evans with 20km to go.

However, the battle to stay clear of the chasing pack in the face of rain and strong winds caught up with Manning and he fell back to the main bunch as Evans beat Hoigaard in the sprint to the line. Behind them, the main field swept up Manning, who finished tenth and at the line Chris Newton was just edged out for third place by Team Down Under’s Cody Stephenson.

As expected, the Swedish Bianchi Scandinavia team looked very strong throughout the stage and with three stage race wins to their credit already this season, they are sure to make an impact as the race heads into more testing terrain later in the week.

Meanwhile the whole of the GB team finished in the leading group along with the Life Repair trio of Kevin Dawson, Mark lovatt and John Tanner. Tomorrow’s stage from Roscrea in the centre of the country, to Clifden on the far West coast promises to be one of the hardest of the race, with strong headwinds and further rain forecast – typical Ras conditions in fact. GB Team Manager John Herety pronounced himself satisfied with the day’s performance from the team.

He also took time to praise the excellent accommodation for the riders and staff on the race – "the service industry is alive an well in Ireland" he said when he spoke to us on Sunday evening from a typically palatial Irish guest-house bedroom.
