Strike 3!

The old and the new came together in the 4,000 metres team pursuit, where four of Britain's Athens silver medal-winning squad split up to partner four of the national squad's up-and-coming under-23's, who will all have benefited from the experience.

Manning and Newton rode with Mark Cavendish and Tom White as Team Persil A, and came out on top in an excellent final against Hayles, Steve Cummings, Matt Brammeier and Ed Clancy as Persil B.

The B team led through the first kilometre in 1-05.883 and were still up at half-distance (2-07.913), but the A team - who had qualified fastest - threw in a third kilometre of 1-07.709 to go in front at 3,000 metres and opened out over the last three laps.
