World Cup Team Pursuit (Great Britain)
8-Jan-2005

Total Destruction

GB beat Spain to claim gold in the Team Pursuit final.

Spain again omitted Escobar, who has been concentrating on the individual events and it was GB who rapidly went into the lead. A 65 second first kilometre set the scene and once into their stride they began to reel off sub one minute kilometres and at the half distance GB had a 1.7 second lead.

The crowd noise was amazing and it clearly inspired the riders who just seemed to be floating along. The Spanish began to feel the pressure and started to crumble, losing a man at three quarters distance, whilst GB just got quicker and quicker.

With a couple of laps to go, it looked like the Spaniards would just avoid getting caught, but GB re-doubled their efforts and caught their rivals right on the line, recording an absolutely excellent 4m 03.508s in the process.
