1km Madison Time Trial
It
took the Final pair to go, Chris Newton and Franco Marvulli, to finally
unseat Tony Gibb and James Taylor at the top of the leaderboard. Gibb
and Taylor, the first pairing, looked to have this event sewn up with
a great sub 60 second ride. Nobody really got close until Newton and Marvulli
put in a very slick effort. They looked like they really wanted the win,
were up on the clock on every lap and, in the end, their time of just
over 59 seconds gave it to them by a half a second,
1. C Newton & F Marvulli 59.242
2. T Gibb & J Taylor 59.864
3. I Keisse & M Gilmore 1.00.199
4. J Madsen & M Hester 1.00.230
5. M Brammeier & A Aeschbach 1.01.318
6. D Stam & P Schep 1.01.443
Elite Madison 20Km (80 Laps)
The
evening wound up with a great little Madison. It was clear from the outset
that everyone was up for it and after just twelve laps a group of four
teams got away, including the Downings, Gilmore and Keisse, Schep and
Stam and Smith and Cole. They ground their way to a half lap lead over
the next seven laps and one wondered if their momentum had gone. Behind
them, the main string finally got their act together, but the escapees
found a second wind and inexorably wound them in until contact with the
back of the field was finally made at 53 laps to go. It had been hard
work, but the four teams had committed totally and it was a deserved gain.
In
stark contrast, another four teams, Burke and Bellis, Marvulli and Newton,
Gibb and Taylor and Blythe and Rowe then made a much quicker lap gain,
as the rest of the field lost concentration. But that wasn't the end of
the action as Gilmore and Keisse then charged off the front again, hotly
pursued by Schep and Stam. Marvulli and Newton and the Downings also went
after them and very quickly these four teams had moved a lap clear of
the rest of the field again. With the four sprints for points coming in
the second half of the race, the riders were torn between scoring and
looking for further opportunities to gain a lap.
Marvulli and Newton were the most focused pairing, picking up points
and marking any moves. When they won the third sprint, it was clear that
only Gilmore and Keisse could out-score them. However, Schep and Stam
did make a brave attaempt to claim a third lap, which would have won them
the race. However, it finally came down to the last sprint and Franco
Marvulli made certain that he and Chris Newton were to claim the race
by holding off Matthwe Gilmore to win the final sprint by half a wheel.
