Trouble at the '25'
Comment by Keith Bingham

EVERYONE will sympathise with the timekeepers - and the riders involved - over the mix-up in Sunday's National 25-mile Time Trial Championships, when Chris Newton was wrongly credited with 50-39 seconds instead of 50 59.

For it was the difference between a gold and silver medal.

It was all put right before the presentation, thankfully, when Jason MacIntyre was crowned champion.

Newton's time had been correctly recorded as 50-59 on the timekeeper's sheet but it was read off as 50-39, explained Keith Lawton, CTT assistant secretary (competitions and records.

The timekeepers methodically cross-checking the results when they returned to the HQ discovered the mistake.

By a strange twist of fate, there was a mistake at the title race in South Wales last year, concerning the second and third placings. But this took four days to correct. Then Gethin Butler had to give up the silver to the late Zak Carr, and Laurence Harding the bronze to Charles McCulloch.

SCOTTISH raiding party in the shape of Equipe Velo Ecosse crossed the border into England to take the individual and team honours in Sunday's National 25-mile Championship.

Exactly 10 years after Scotland's former world champ Graeme Obree scored the only previous individual win by a Scotsman, Jason MacIntyre took a dramatic victory on the Princethorpe course in Warwickshire over 1999 champion Chris Newton (Recycling. co.uk)

He was backed in Velo Ecosse's team win by Mark Atkinson and Gary Robson.

MacIntyre's gain was Newton's loss. The Olympic track rider looked to have taken the title by four seconds when his time was initially posted as 50-39 to MacIntyre's 50-43, but when the timekeepers returned from their duties out on the course to check the result board they spotted that Newton's actual time of 50-59 had been incorrectly marked up.

The final podium place went to Matt Bottrill (De Rosa RT), who repeated his bronze medal performance of two weeks earlier in the 10-mile championship.

Defending champion Michael Hutchinson (In Gear RT), after a close call at 10 miles, was well out of contention this time, finishing an unfamiliar eighth in 53-23 after struggling with torn tendons in his right wrist.

Newton managed somehow to smile through his disappointment, while MacIntyre's reaction was one of disbelief. "You're taking the mick, aren't you?" he said on being told he was the winner. It eventually sank in and, choked with emotion, he telephoned home to Fort William to give his father the good news.

The early standard in a 150strong field for the Leamington C and AC event was set by 18-yearold Daniel Shand (West Pennine RC), off number two, whose 5435 was not bettered until 10-mile silver medallist Paul O'Mahoney (Ghyllside Cycles), off more than an hour later, finished in 52-40.

Richard Prebble (Pinarello RT), twice the champion more than a decade ago, came home in 53-26 and Craig Simpson (Blue Sky Cycles) clocked 53-10, both unable to shift O'Mahoney from top spot.

It was MacIntyre who unseated O'Mahoney. The Scotsman had already signalled his form the previous week when he had taken the Scottish 10-mile Championship ahead of Obree.

But Newton and all the top seeds were still to finish. Hutchinson, not looking his usual self on the road, seemed out of the picture already, his 26-21 at half distance leaving him over a minute adrift of Maclntyre. There was no way he could close that kind of gap, and his final 53-23 put him out of the big picture for the first time in six years.

MacIntyre: "I'm just shocked"

IT took new champion Jason Maclntyre, 32, some time to accept his victory. "I'm just shocked and can't believe it," he said after Newton's time had been corrected on the result board.

"I had been feeling sorry for myself when it looked as though I had lost by just four seconds, but that must be nothing like Chris is feeling now.

"After winning the Scottish 10-mile Championship last week I knew I had the form and today I put everything into it.

"To get the team prize as well is a big reward for all those who helped us come here today from Scotland.

"It's an expensive business and a long way for us to come, and I'm not looking forward to our eight-hour drive home."

"Afterwinning the Scottish 10-mile Championship last week I knew I had the form" Jason Maclntyre

Chris Newton accepted his misfortune with good grace. "These things can happen," he said. "I was looking at some old Cycling Weekly magazines and came across my 1999 win in the championship. I had hoped to do it again today.

"I set off steadily and rode my way into it today, but I just didn't do enough in the end. It was very hot. I rode the course yesterday and drank a whole bottle and I took one with me today. It's easy to get dehydrated." Matt Bottrill was "really made up" with his second silver medal in as many weeks. "This has been my target all year," he said. Michael Hutchinson made a late decision to ride. "I've not been too well this last week, and then I tore the tendons in my right wrist," he explained.
